The yellow table
Every Sunday, Dad burned the toast. He would scrape it over the sink and say, ‘Adds flavour.’ Mum would roll her eyes. We had a little yellow table. I can still picture it.
There were four of us around that table: Mum, Dad, my brother Peter and me. Peter sat nearest the window. I had the chair that wobbled, and I complained about it every week.
